What should I do to prepare my goods for transport?
Answer: Defrost, clean and dry your refrigerator and make sure that your washing machine is also well drained, clean and dry before you move. Empty flammable fuel from your lawn mower, gas bottles and lamps etc. before you load them. Take the opportunity to discard items that you do not want (why pay for the space that they can take up when you don’t want them anyway?). Although your container will be wind and water tight, you should place your soft furnishings (mattresses, padded chairs, sofas etc.) into plastic covers. We recommend this because you cannot be sure of the weather while you are loading and/or unloading. These plastic covers also provide protection against dust, condensation or other unexpected moisture and unavoidable fume smells etc. Thoroughly wash any item that might have soil attached, i.e. garden tools, lawn mower, wheel barrow etc. Some states within Australia insist on that.
How should I pack my cartons?
Answer: Generally, put heavy items into small cartons and lighter items into larger cartons. Pack the heavier items to the bottom of the carton and lighter items to the top of the carton. Wrap everything inside the carton in clean butchers paper and pack so as to ensure that there is no movement within the carton. Fill voids with crushed (screwed up) paper. Wrap plates separately and pack them into the carton on the edges. Pack as much into cartons as you can. If it fits into a carton it should travel in a carton. Your goods will be much better protected against possible damage inside a carton.
If I hire a container that will hold 32 cubic metres, will I get 32 cubic metres into the container?
Answer: No. No matter how proficient you are at loading your container, you can not expect to fill every available space. Always allow at least 10% leeway.
